I read in the herald that they are going to use grants to help businesses in the downtown paint and buy awnings to make them look better. O.K. I am all for this stuff needing done but why are they giving these owners money ? Heck one of them just hit powerball on top of his current wealth and they are giving grants ? Do I get money to improve my homes appearance? I would like to put siding on will they help? This is what these owners do time and time again ,wait until someone else fixes it up or tears it down for them . I do not agree that these grants should be used in this manner . There are plenty of other good uses it could be used for than to make empty buildings appear better. Use it to attract a few tenants perhaps.

Dont you think that cleaning up the hood would attract more tenants and bring more people out of their homes to shop? I personally do numnuts. No free handouts. you may want to seek employment for yourself rather than complaining about what you dont get.

Are these scumlords even seeking tenants? Why do they deserve grants . Why haven't they fixed up these places for years and years? I'll speak my mind if I so desire so piss off nonuts. And where are they going to shop ? I am not complaining about what I did not get but complaining about the people who do not deserve it for leaving their buildings get run down in the first place.

I said I do not disagree these places need fixed up but what qualifies them for the grants ? I work hard keep my place fixed up and presentable , but if I did as they and leave empty and run down would I then qualify for the same?

Instead of giving these scumlords money to fix up buildings, give me the money to buy the buildings and I will fix them up AND put businesses in them. Guaranteed. I offered to buy 2 different buildings downtown and they turned me down. They said they were not interested in selling OR renting. Now we are going to give them money to paint or whatever to dilapidated buildings? That is a waste of money. You might as well flush it down the toilet.

what a shame. I do not understand why they do this. Are they getting tax write offs for leaving vacant? I think council needs to pass some ordinances controlling it somehow.

The politicians collect your taxes and recycle a small portion back to the 'community" in the form of a grant after removing a great percentage of the allocation by absorbing it into the bureaucracy. So for every dollar of your taxes dedicated to "grants" you get back a few cents. would it not be better if the money never left the community in the first place , remaining as income to the taxpayers/nontaxpayers and simply recycled through the private enterprises owned and operated by the local folks. Being in favor of grants simply shows how brainwashed we are by the political system. I totally agree with you on grants and with most taxes. The individual or community knows how to spend their money better than the large "central" government does. But, this grant money is a little different, because it is generated by hotel taxes, which usually is paid by outsiders and not residents of the county. I don't like the idea that the money only goes to "tourist trap" type of organizations. The money should be used for anything community related like parks and recreation which is visitors will also use AND will entice people to move here, not just visit. Of course, what do I know, I am not a money grubbing uneducated politician like Kula, Mahoney, Vicities, Zapotosky, DeWeese, and Zimmerlink, I am just an educated, intelligent private citizen that looks at things logically, not politically.

Well put. I couldnt agree with you more. I read that the first checks were sent by BP to the residence living on the Gulf. The local Harley Davidson dealership was saying that their entire inventory was baught up and they have bikes on back order. Unbelievable. I am sure that there are business that were hit hard due to the spill and these people effected do need the money but it also seems, once again, that there are people taking advantage of free handouts. I want a free Harley too.
