Connellsville School district needs to follow suit and do this..... Hundreds of DC school employees to be dismissed WASHINGTON – The D.C. Public Schools are firing 241 teachers and warning more than 700 other employees that they could be fired in the next year if their performance doesn't improve. The firings announced Friday total 302 school system employees, including the 241 teachers. They come largely as a result of the first year of a new teacher evaluation system, though 76 teachers were fired for problems with their licenses. The evaluation is based largely on five classroom observations of teachers and their students' standardized test scores. Those found "ineffective" on a four-tier system were fired. Washington Teachers' Union President George Parker says the union will challenge the firings for performance.

That will never happen any where in Pennsylvania. Why? Because the PSEA, the largest Teachers' union in the state own the state's politicians. They give money to every politician (mostly democrats) from the governor down to county commissioners and down to some township supervisors AND even some school directors, especially retired teachers or teachers' relatives. The unions own the schools and government. The kids and property owners are screwed in PA. That should be the new state motto. Come to PA and get screwed!

happen in PA and it will. New Jersey is also in the midst of firing teachers and others school staff, and has put on notice that the State can no longer afford to do business with the teachers union. This is going to spread like wild fire, the money is gone, citizens tired of schools that have budgets that are driving people out of their homes, and school boards that build schools to resemble a National Monument and learning is often an after thought.

The average teachers salary in New Jersey is $65,000/yr. Of that, 5.5% goes into their retirement fund. The deal on the table is to have them contribute 1% to help pay for their expensive medical coverage. Sounds fair to me. I pay for approx 25% of the cost of coverage for spouse and me on a group policy insuring at least 25,000 people. And I make a lot less than $65k/yr. I also have a lot less job security. This one percent will reduce the New Jersey budget shortfall this year by $15 billion. But look at the cities and counties around the country that are cutting their police force and fireman cadres while keeping every last bureaucrat on the payroll. How about the city (not a big one) in California paying their city manager $800k/yr and the police chief $650k/yr. This is insanity. And I'll bet their pension plans would make us all envy. If you do not believe that we must take control of our political lives, then we are lost because it takes a majority to bring about change. And I do not mean the kind of change we got in 2006.

I don't think you want to come to PA to get screwed. You want to come here to become a teacher. Why do you jealous people just keep trying to hammer the unions. The unions built this country and still are keeping it strong. It's the non-union jealous minority that are our biggest problem.

The non-union manufacturing jobs are making as much if not more than the union jobs. Unions are not needed anymore. Unions represent less than 5% of all employees in the private sector. I don't care if there are unions or not. If you want to unionize, then go ahead and flush your money down the toilet. I don't think public sector employees (government employees) should be allowed to unionize. We don't allow the military to unionize, so school teachers and any other person paid with tax dollars should not be allowed to form a union. It is a waste of tax dollars.

You're entitled to your opinion and I rspect that. But without the unions, the rich Republicans would be ever richer.

If unions and politics have anything in common, it is the total disconnect that exists between the rank and file and the leaders. Union leaders tell members how they should vote. It should be the members telling the leaders who to support and without spending one dime of union money on political campaigns. Truly, unions should be apolitical. Who in any union has the right to tell any member how to vote? No better example of a political body being disconnected from their constituancy could be demonstrated than the one in D.C. today. As we pass a healthcare plan in the face of majority opposition, England gives up on theirs and disguises that move by claiming to "decentralize" the plan by moving the decision making down to the level of the doctors. Look out unemployment office, here comes thousands and thousands of out of work bureaucrats. No mention yet of the only real final solution to this $150 billion English problem which is privatization. and then they will have gone full circle while we are only embarking on this stupid journey. God help us all.

Only Republicans are rich? Let's list a few rich people who aren't democrats. Clintons. boobamas. Kennedys. Kerrys. Bloombergs. Frankel. Schumer. Jacksons. Sharptons. Franks. Pelosis. Reids. Jobs. Gates. Murthas. Rendells. Caseys. How many more do you want me to name. I could list a whole lot of CEOs that are democrats and a lot more democrat politicians that like to raise taxes, because they have a habit of not paying them, then when they get caught they say "ooops. sorry." Lots of them. Too many to sit here and list for you, because it won't matter, because in your simple little mind only republicans are rich.

You named about 10 rich Democrats, how about the Rockefellers, the guy who started Microsoft? I only needed 2 Republicans to neutralize your names. You want to add Sarah Palin's name to the list. The Republicans are the party of the rich because they get taxed less than they do from the Democratic leaders in office.

The Rockefellers are/were democrats. Go talk to the WV Rockefeller. This is a dem/rep thing as much as it is a black/white thing. Everyone in Congress is rich and look who has the majority. Enough said...again. Go put your head back under your mommy's petticoat.

Nelson Rockefeller was a Republican who ran as Gerald Ford's VP and his grandson was the governor of NY. So much for your stupid and sarcastic remarks that you thought were so cute.

back to the original post....you're not going to have qualified teachers...as long as nepotism continues after having an anti-nepotism policy....they continue to NOT hire those more qualified than others...it continues.
