My maternal great grandparents were of the same Geary family. the current family genealogist is David Geary, living in New Mexico. My mother and David cooperated for years on gathering the family history. One little note of history came to light resulting from their work as they discovered a relative that was a fifer during the revolutionary war. His grave was found in a little private cemetery and was cleaned up for a proper celebration. My mother was guest of honor, as the oldest known living family member, and a high ranking officer from the Pentagon was the guest speaker. As I just moved, the family geneology that has been passed down to me is in one of many unopened boxes. However, as time allows, I will locate David Geary's address and email address and pass them on to you. Also as I open these boxes and find mothers research, I will be most happy to share her findings with you. You might also be interested to know that the Geary that was a mayor of San Francisco some many years ago was a member of the clan. Hopefully most of the family notoriety will be of a positive nature but then again, some spice in the family would make for more interesting reading. There were Gearys still living on land that dates back to the 1800's when I last visited Connellsville and yes, that part of Spruce Hollow was known as Geary Hill. At least three of the Geary brothers had farms there with a lot of decendents still in the area. Hopefully some of them visit this forum and will provide you with up to date information on the family. Meanwhile, best wishes and God bless.

There were a bunch of Gearys from the Dry Hill area and there was a Geary Lane or something. I think the father's name was William Geary. He used to work on the railroad, but He is now in jail for killing his wife.

My e mail address is cgeary@salamancany.org I am trying to look for information on the Geary family. I know that many of them grew up in Connellsville PA in Fayette County. Some names that I have are Wade Strong(stewart)Geary, William Grant Geary, Edith, Homer(shorty), Hazel, Carl,Roy, Eugene, Thomas E., Wade Randall and Robert William. Any of these ring a bell? Any information would help. It was said that they lived on Geary hill. Is there really a Geary Hill or did they just call it that? Thank you for your time and any information. Crystal M. Geary(daughter of Thomas E. Geary)

I just found your web site and love it, keep up the good work. I live in Evansville, IN and everyone in my family is from Connellsville but me. My parents graduated from Connellsville High School in 1949 and 1954 and lived in Connellsville until 1961. I was reading on this site where a few people believe that the Carnegie Library is haunted. I was just wondering if anyone has anything to back that up or if it's just a kids story. My great aunt Nell Whipkey Detweiler Whipkey was the head librarian there for many, many years. I believe she retired sometime in the 70's. Thanks for reading! Carol

Thank you, I appreciate your help! I still would love to know where the Kelly Hotel stood. If anyone remembers the Willard Hotel @ Brimstone corner, my grandmother owned it from 1950-1965, I would love to hear some stories. Thanks for your time. Carol

I am working on some Connellsville history and was wondering where the old KELLY HOTEL stood. I have found an address of 207-209 Water St. but I have been told the numbers have changed since 1904. Any help at all will be appreciated! Thanks, Carol

Wasn't this park used as a ballfield at one time? I've seen old newspaper articles that stated game scores for "Soisson" park, unless I'm imstaken? Is'nt it sad I dont know where its at(by name)and I lived there for 25 odd years.I guess I do that with everything, for instance loving a song but not knowing the name...:(

Soisson Park I believe was in Dunbar Township at the end of 16th St. which is all woods now. Another way of going would be up the hill from the Super WallMart or up over the hill from the minature golf course. If you go in the woods there, you will still see concrete slabs that used to be the park.

YES
You can still smell the aroma. Connellsville and Fayette County in general classifies as a nut shop.

More Memories
Can you smell the aroma coming from The Nut Shoppe on south Arch Street?

Regarding Daily, Phillips, Clark, Shupe, Reagan, Meyers, Treaher, Slagell, you must have attended the old Southside School with the fire escapes on the outside. Went to Koury's grocery on Davidson avenue, across from the Gulf Station at the corner of Davidson and Race Streets. Maybe visited Shartzer's grocery a little further up on Davidson Ave.. The janitor that played Santa Claus had to be Harold May. He would roast apples on the school's boilers for us kids if we brought them in. Going to Newmeyer's Store in the Colonial Theater Building and watching them roast that lovely roast beef every Friday (during Lent) in the Rotissomat in the front window of Blocker's Grill across the street from Keagy's Drug on the corner. Getting those shoes repaired at DiLella's shoe repair (next to Newmeyer's). Playing ball in the vacant lot bordering Pittsburgh St. between Cedar Ave. & Washington Ave. The other church on the corner of Green & Pittsburgh streets across from the big gray church (now a parking lot). McIntire Funeral Home & McCormick's funeral home across Pittsburgh street on the other side. Buying candy at Millies store near the bottom of Wills Road. Getting your coats cleaned at Goodman's cleaners. Watching the Pennsylvania Railroad trains cut across Pittsburgh Street go over the river and cut across Crawford Ave.. Shopping at the big markets like A&P, Acme, Thorofare, Loblaws. Greitzer's, Luckey's, Rulli's, and Clover Farms Stores. Having your milk delivered in glass bottles from Quality Dairy."From early morn, 'till late at night, We work together, with all our might, To give you a product that's rich and pure, and it's the best, You can be sure!
