For those of you who have never been to Pechins Market in Dunbar, Pa., you really owe it to yourself to check it out. It not like any store you've ever been in . I remember going with my mom back in the 60's and 70's. We went twice a month . We would fill two carts. Or as my mom called them "buggies". The front of the store had a cement floor. In the back, at the meat department, the floor was of wood. On a rainy day there would be buckets sitting around to catch the rain as it entered through the roof. I can remember that there was this man who pulled a meat wagon to the meat department. And the women would be grabing meat off it as he pulled it. Food was very cheap at that store. It still is. After we checked out, getting to our car was a trip dodging cars and the dips, bumps, and potholes in the parking lot. On time my mom almost spilt her whole cart in a pothole. Also I forgot to say, that the store is right next to a train track. When a train would go by, you could feel the vibration in the store. Also treat yourself to the cafeteria. Its not the cleanest looking place, but you can't beat the prices. The last time I was there, the hamburgers were 19 cents, a cup of coffee was 5 cents. I was there about a year ago. I remember a teacher from Connellsville High say he was going to take his family, and paint the town red at Pechins! You can feed a family of four for less than $10. So if your ever near Dunbar, PA. Treat yourselves and "Paint the Town Red!"

It would be nice to see a picture of Rock Ridge School. I attended there in the mid 1930's There cannot be too many of us left to appreciate seeing it again after all these years.

I too would be interested in seeing any views of the old Rock Ridge School. The building was in disrepair by the time I arrived there, and it was abandoned and razed when I was in third grade. However, I have vivid memories of the community there and of the laid back environment we studied it. I think something has been lost.

I also love East Park. I am told that my grandfather helped build it. It makes me sick how the bad kids in the area are destroying it! I think the city should pay a few people to be security down there. It would create a couple more jobs and keep that old, beautiful park nice for all those who visit there with there children. I also think that if they ever catch the kids that do this, that they should have to do public service. Such as clean up or fix what they did wrong. and other things. See how they like cleaning up after people like themselves.

I just watched a program on PBS Tv. about the "teenage brain" All you teens should see it. I quarantee you would never attempt to experiment with drugs if you saw what it does to a perfectly normal developing adolescent brain. Drugs totally destroy and re-wire your brain forever. Hurts any future you may have. You will not be teens forever, so don't mess up you precious brain. You only get ONE. I grew up in C'ville when it was so innocent and wonderful. Never heard of drugs. Guys would sneak beer, but no drugs. I graduated in 1960 and sure miss the small town living. I wish I could have raised my 3 sons in a place like Connellsville used to be. I loved East Park and the shows. Had my first piece of Pizza ever in the tiny Pizza shop on the way home from East Park. Loved Hetzels and all the other hangouts. Kids, please, for your own sake, stay clean and drug free. Don't make drugdealers rich.

I've enjoyed this page and so does my mother whom has lived here all her life. There are some questions we have. How can we get a view of the old RockRidge Elem. school, that is part of our history and also there is a cemetery on Broadford Road that is of the Walkers maybe? when I was younger my sister and I came across it. It's a small hill right on the road. I'm willing to help in this search in anyway I can. And if we could the history of the old river that used to flow through Davison Hill?

Thank you very much. I have been doing family reseach for over 15 years and rescently I found I was related to William & Valentine Crawford. At present I am trying to compose an intriduction story for my aunt , the last of her gereration ( she is in her 80's) and the picture of the cabin will be a great way to start. Can you suggest who I might speck with for more information about cabin as well as family. Just a side note. In 1976 I moved to northern Maine with planes to build a cabin in the woods. Now over tweenty-five years later I learn of the Crawford Homestead. My cabin is 12 by 15. It is certainly a small world. Bye for now Doug

I love this sight! And would love to add some of my memories. When I was a teen in the late 70s, I would walk to town alot. I take my children there now and tell them of how it use to be. A friend and myself use to eat at McCroys. I wonder if anyone else remembers the balloons they had hung up. You would pick a balloon, the waitress would pop it and take out the little piece of paper that was in it. The paper would say how much your banana split would cost. If you were lucky, only a few cents. If we didn't eat there, we went to Burns drug store. That is were we got our first REAL cherry coke. (not that stuff they sell in bottles today.) They also still have those old wooden telephone booths in the back. At that time it was only 10 cents to call. We also use to go to Murphy's 5&10. They had two floors. I also remember Troutmans. And riding the elevator. And talking to the elevator operator. Atkin's Records was another store we went to. We would check out the 45s and instruments. It always smelt like Mr. Atkins cigars. Before leaving town we would stop at the A&B Bakery. Were a old man and lady would sell us there little cookies with pink centers. And other goodies. Does anyone else remember the raindeer decorations that went across the west side bridge? My mother said they were burnt up in a fire where they were stored. The most favorite spot for my son is East Park. Its a really nice place. So shady and pleasent. Too bad about the vandelism. I couldn,t wait to get out of C'ville when I was a kid. But now I wish I lived there still.

I was raised in Cville and left in 61 after the military and graduating from St. Vincent College. I return home about every other year or so at this time to visit my brother Barry who lives in Cville and my brother Tim who lives in Greensburg. I graduated from the old high school in 53 and have many fond memories of the old town. The Saturday and Friday nights downtown when all the shopping was done and where one could see all his friends. I remember during the Christmas season of 54 when I was home on leave from the army prior to shipping out and saw a bunch of friends while standing on Brimstone corner in the evenings during the Xmas shopping. As usual, I later went upstairs to hang out at Louie Grahams Brimstone Billiards and met many other friends home for the holidays. Cville will always be home. The Coker football, the old gym where the ball would not bounce back when hitting the dead spots in the north west corner, Ed Spotts and Art Ruff getting us all into shape, and Bill Dolde are all etched in my memory. I suppose I get nostalgic as I get older and often think about what would have been had I stayed, but time must move on, mustn't it. I was born in the Connellsville State Hospital in 1941 and raised most of the time at 1218 Chestnut Street in the south side.My father was Warren M. (Dutch) Decker and mother was Edna Charlesworth Decker, both deceased and buried in Oak Grove cemetary. Although I live in Uniontown for work, I always associate being raised in the river town with all the locomotive smells and Chinese Chestnut trees. The clanking of the street cars, especially out race street, and the wonderful smell of Keagy's (sp?) Drugstore on Pittsburgh Street. My two Aunts are alive at this writing. The oldest is 90 years and is Emma Jean. And, the youngest is Wanda, living still on the South side too. It is to bad that industry left Fayette County and more especially Connellsville as she is still a fine city of which to be living. For the future, it would be a boon to use the river for more recreation and play. I also would like to see the city become more involvrd in the activities of Fayette county and less introspective than they are now. Perhaps that would help bring more life and industry into the city. This is a great site and I hope it doesn't go down.

My great grandparents were from Connellsville. I was about 6 years old when my brother was born in Connellsville. I love seeing the pictures, it has been a long time but I have very good memories of Connellsville. Walking to school and playing in the park. TERRORISM We, like you, watched the events of September 11 in horror and total disbelief. There were tears shed by almost everyone on Sint Maarten/St. Martin no matter what their nationality may be. It is common place to now see the American flag displayed at many companies be they American, Dutch, French, Canadian, Indian, etc. owned. Without doubt most of us lost friends and customers in those tragic events as many of you have. As the majority of the peoples of the world, we abhor the insanity of terrorism and those who perpetrate it, no matter what their race, religion or motivations are. And we wholeheartedly support the seeking out, finding and bringing to justice any person or group who practice terrorism. Of course we also support the meting out of instant justice where it is the best means to and end. Both our son and his wife are in positions where they will be involved with searching for and possibly handling the disposition of these rogue humans. Of course, we are concerned but we are also proud of them. A few days ago we received an e-mail from a long time customer and friend, who is a member of the 67th precinct, New York Police Department. He first told us that all of his fellow officers at the 67th were okay but that they had, of course, lost many brothers and sisters of the NYPD and NYFD in the tragedy and had been working night and day since the eleventh. Never-the-less he, his wife and several other officers will be making their annual trip to SXM in early November for a little rest and relaxation and told us to be sure to have plenty of cold beer on hand. This attitude is one that we should all adopt. There is a very real possibility that additional attacks may occur but if we succumb to fear and remain cowering in our homes the terrorists will have accomplished just what they set out to do. Any of you who have been to Israel, Northern Ireland or England know that there is always the chance that some lunatic may place a bomb in any public area. Yet the citizens of these, and other areas of the world where terrorism is more commonplace, go on with their lives. As citizen of the United States or any other country effected by these events we should support the retaliation and recovery efforts but also move ahead as normally as possible. Don't let these idiots dictate how we are going to live. The authorities worldwide have introduced a multitude of additional security measures to reduce the chances of another attack and are in the process of tracking down both the perpetrators of this incident and any who might attempt additional violence. We wish them much success. In the meantime make the most of your lives and we hope to see you in Sint Maarten/St. Martin again soon.
