As an African American born and raised in Connellsville, PA and researching my family roots, I was disappointed that there is no mention of African Americans, except for Mr. Woodruff. It's a known fact that Connellsville was one of the underground railroad routes used by slaves when seeking freedom. Perhaps in the future, you will be all inclusive.

I Hope its not true about the Aarons building! I love the old buildings. New is not always better. Why can't people just maintain or fix old buildings. In sted of destroying them. I often told my husband, if we had the money to buy or build a house, that I would rather have a older home. They have character! The Aaron building has character! They don't have the craftsmen like those in the old days! And I agree, We don't need any more parking lots, doller stores, pizza places, burger places, ect. Thats why no one shops in Connellsville anymore. There is nothing of quality there anymore. Where are the bakeries, the furniture stores, the department stores? I know that there are alot of poor people in Connellsville. There's poor people everywhere. But even poor people get sick of the cheap junk stores. I live in Indiana, Pa. and all we ever get is doller stores, pizza and hamberger places, and auto parts stores. Our mall is dead to. I hate to shop there. We always go to the double decker malls in Johnstown and Greensburg. They say variety is the spice of life. So please get with it Connellsville! Please don't destroy the old buildings, and get some new stores in there. Also please think of some things you can do for the young people. Remember the arcade that was on south side in the early 80's? Maybe something like that. Or maybe a theater like we use to have. Roller skating or a dance hall. So please, I'm putting my faith in you. Please restore my REAL home. And, please don't forget East Park.

Hello connellsville they need to do something with the old Aarons Furnature Building other than tear it down they should renovate it to the way it used to be when it was built. That is a cool building of Connellsville's past it should not be like Troutmans with pigeons roosting in it because they had to tear it down down.So save Aarons Furnatue before it is to late!!!!

i have researched the moving of the graves from the old connell grave yard and can answer questions if you like. they moved the graves at the turn of the century to make way for a library paid for with a grant from carnegie provided the city condemn ground for it. a coughenour was paid to bulldoze down 5 feet and the graves were moved to chestnut on the side hill where they had fallen into disrepair.. they are cleared tody but many are illegible and some families moved their family members elsewhere. any other questions please e-mail me at wilderesstim@hotmail.com

I was looking on the Connellsville guest book and saw this message: Monday, January 28, 2002 How come there isn't any history information on the graveyards that use to be where the Carnegie Library stands today? Where did they move the grave yard at or didn't they move the caskets? I would like to know to find out if I have any great relatives from back then.Thank you it would be very much appreciated There are some gravestones in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery (across from East Park) that I believe are from this cemetery where the library was build. Most of them are from the 1850's if I remember correctly. I discovered them in a part of the cemetery that was once overgrown and cleared off (the lower part facing "Soap Hollow." Apparently they were laying flat and whoever discovered them just placed them in rows over this hillside. I have wondered about this myself, and went to the library to check this out but couldn't find any information about where they were relocated. This is just my theory. I also tend to think they just moved the stones without moving the caskets. I doubt if, at that time, there was much left of them...we're talking at least 50 years with wooden coffins that probably disintegrated. And from the location they put them (if these were the stones) it was really too steep of a hillside to bury people, I would think. I grew up in Connellsville, but I live in South Carolina now, and haven't been to the cemetery for a while...however, as far as I know these stones are still there. I hope they are safe, because I know there was a lot of vandalism in that cemetery over the years. This is a very beautiful, old fashioned and historical cemetery that I hope will be preserved long term. .

I never thought I would miss the town, but now that I have been away for about 7 years(except for the occasional weekend trip)I miss the whole atmosphere. There is a big difference between living in the country and living in the suburbs.I just wished there would have been alot of employment back home,so I wouldn't had to move away. But anyways,me and Butch and our two girls are doing really good. Hello to Connellsville! I just recently visit my family in C'ville, we went to Bud Murphy's and were joined by many friends and family. We went to Bud's on a Wed, Kareoke night; we had a great time. My brother, Kim McGuinness, sang "Mustang Sally", he impressed us all. I have always enjoyed going to Bud's during my visits home, keep up the great hospitality and entertainment and you will continue the great success that Bud's has shown over the many years past. Your pizza is the best. I always see friends that I haven't seen in years almost every time I go to Bud's during my visits to C'ville. I not only got to sing at Bud's during their Kareoke but also at Bender's in Uniontown; it was a great time. God Bless! Michelle "Shelly" McGuinness Walls See you this summer!

AHHHH; East park... lot of fond memories. summer picnics; swimming in the creek; hot summer nights; movies; bands; dancing etc. etc. etc. Yes the bon fires with discarded Christmas trees; also bon fires prior to big rival football games i.e. Uniontown VS Connellsville. What wonderful times we had there. I sure do miss ole Connellsville, PA USA. I sure hope I can make it back there by next year.. Still have a lot of family living there. He Paul Zinger, your not the pro golfer Paul Azinger?!?!?... It would be nice if the community can get the local boy/girl scouts or other local group of interest to keep the park in good shape, nice if the Community Commerce can see to starting entertainment in the park again they need something like that to give folks something to do on hot summer nights. AHHHHH, what memories of East Park.

I was reading over the guest book and I too remember East Park fondly. Many a special event took place there. Class of 64. I hope them find a group to take care of it as there aren't enough places for people of all ages to enjoy. We have the peninsula up here and several nature areas. The schools or scouts would be a great group to help improve the area. Any class mates out there I would love hearing from you. Paul Zinger I'd love to here from you and your wife. Yes I remember the huge bonfires.

I lived just above East Park on Blackstone Ave from 1949 to 1967. As a kid it was a great place to while away a summer day. The school district or the city sponsored summer play ground activities for the little kids. They had a spray pool on hot summer days to cool off. Somebody was always playing baseball or tennis and of course we were always playing in the creek. As we got older, it was a place away from the parents where you could meet someone of the opposite sex. If you look in the connellsville "old Postcard" sectiion, you will see a postcard titled "chestnut hill cemetery. In the background is the cemetery of course, but in the front you will see a bridge. This is the bridge that spanned the ravine or valley of East Park befor it was filled in and the tunnel built. My parents and grandparents always refered to this area of Wills road as "the fill". I also remember when the whole place got flooded and nearly washed away in the late 50's or early 60's. Does anyone remember the hugeChristmas tree bonfires they used to have down there after Christmas with the discarded Christmas trees?

In the late 30's or early 40's F.D.R. put forth a number of Grants to help out of work americans from the great depression. The park was built with one of these grants, the Community has over the years assembled various Clean up and maintenance Projects to keep the park looking good. One of these was done in 1997, when the park was looking Very run down, and Local Youth from a near by cafe all got together and cleaned the park and then threw a free concert together with 9 local bands participating. Here again is the beauty of the Connellsville Website. I received an email this morning from a resident of Connellsville asking if I knew the history of East Park. MMMMM...darn I sure do not. How did East Park come about? Who was responsible for its establishment, when, all those interesting facts. Anyone out there have any history on the park? Inquiring minds you know! I will be awaiting any information out there!

While researching the family history I came across this site. I'm hoping someone might have some information on my great grandmother, Missouri White. I was told that she and her third husband, Williams Collins, had a general store in Connellsville sometime during the period 1910 - 1940. Does this ring a bell?

East Park holds many fond memories for me. We did see movies there, live bands all kinds of social events. We would go there and walk around to socialize. There were folks of all ages. Each time I read that it has not been maintained my heart aches just a little. I do remember that going to the park was great...but oh that hill to get home! I am wondering does the High School not have clubs? Perhaps that could become a senior project or perhaps the Varsity Club? I am not sure what kind of Scouting program exists there but there is a great Eagle Scout project. Go to a town council meeting or write a letter to the editor. You might be surprised the support you may generate. Save EAST PARK!

I was just wondering if anyone has any good memories of East Park. My mom told me that they use to show movies down there. It makes me sick to see the destruction down there. People throwing garbage down over the hill, play equipment set on fire, picnic tables broken up and thrown in the creek. I think if they ever catch those brats, they should make them do community service. Such as cleaning up and fixing public parks. I hope that someday they pay someone to watch over things down there and catch these criminals!

Gary, those Brick Structures are the Beehive Coke Ovens, you see, this used to be one of the Largest industrial areas in the United States, Producing Massive ammounts of coal, And the Coke ovens were used to Burn the Coal to make coke and then shiped off to Pittsburgh to make Steel. Actually, this area is the Cradle of the Industrial Revolution. If you ever get a Chance, you should see the Linden Hall, it was the PlayGround of the Rich industrialists back in the Day...its right out side of Dawson...which is right outside of Connellsville.

Thank you Dave G, Ann, Paul and Janet for your messages - I hope to see more positive messages in the future! Those of you with the negative attitudes and the poor me attitudes will never get on with your lives until you make a positive change in your community, quit waiting for someone else to do it for you. Strive to have a better place to live. Walk on the bike trail, explore the beautiful woods of PA; Ohiopyle is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see in the Fall - enjoy it! Decide to take a positive direction, instead of a negative one, and make a difference. I thank God every day for my health, and for what he has given me; life is not going to be without heartache and sadness - that's life! During this lent season give thanks and praise, go to church just once with a believer and open your minds and hearts to the miracles of life. It will make a difference if you just let it. God Bless! From across the continental United States Amen to Paul and Ann, I too am a native of Connellsville, believe me there is no difference from C'ville of 40 yrs ago or today or of any other city in another state only the children are different. Children of the world you can be creative or destructive, your destiny is what you make it. If you are soooooo bored then do something creative like reading a good book, riding a bike, inventing new games, writing new books, etc. If you want to be destructive and have cheap thrills then go ahead and take those drugs (including beer and other alcoholic drinks which are drugs too) but do not blame anyoneelse for your failures as you have noone to blame but yourself. Life it what you make it live it as an adventure and learning experience. Again, hi again to all the folks back in old C'ville, Pa USA

Hello to all those who remember Connellsville in those days gone by. But there is no reason those days cannot return. I check in now and again. Today I was pleased to see so many folks responding to what appears to be so much negativity regarding Connellsville. Paul, what an excellant message. Home is what you make it...no matter where it is. If you don't like it...change it. If you do nothing to change it..then live it. Pride in the community is a community affair. To the young of C'ville, open your minds to the power of change. You have already given up. You are far too young for that as you have a life time of challenges ahead of you. Stop blaming and start changing. In the words of Billy Joel..."we didn't start the fire", but you can put it out! In each and every corner of the world there resides the ugly dark side of life. You can hide your eyes from it, pretend it is not there and it will like a fungus grow. Or you can "Weed and Seed" your town. Weed out the ugly and plant seeds anew to nurture and grow. Watching from afar. Annie Tobias

It's so sad to see so many negative comments about my old home town. If I may philosophize a bit...yes Connellsville may not be the town it once was. No place on earth is what it was 20 or thirty years ago. What a town, state or nation will be is not a result of its geographic location or name. A town, state or nation is what it's people are. Each one of you who now live in Connellsville ARE the town. You have the power to make it what it is! If drugs and crime are a problem then the decent, honest people have to have the guts to stand up and demand something better. Even the young people who are concerned about their education have a right to stand up and say we want something better. Young people in Connellsville, it's your town, it's your school system, it's your life, it's your future. Whimp out now and you will be whimping out for the rest of your life.

Sorry to read about the drug problems in the school. I finished in '81 and there was alot of drugs then too. I think every school in every town has a drug problem. I lived in South Connellsville until I was 20. I live in what some people would call the sticks now. I think there is alot more to do in Connellsville than where I live. When I lived in South Connellsville , I could walk to town in 20 min. Now it takes me 20 min. to drive to town. Those were the good old days.

Nice town, and the scenery is great especially in fall, but it's so boring! We're so dull that we get excited when a bear crawls up into a tree! OK I'll admit that that rarely happens, but still, it was in the paper and it held up traffic for hours...it was really sad. And the school system isn't too great either. "Public Education. It's working in Pennsylvania." Hmm...well maybe in the REST of it. Here at CAHS we have a SERIOUS drug problem and the air is polluted (don't believe me? call the school and ask about the fungi in the air...). And not only that but the majority of the kids here really have no intention of learning. A lot of them are on drugs, and selling them too. No, I don't know anyone in particular (so don't go hacking my IP), but it's obvious. It's really hard to say something good about Connellsville. I wish I was born 20 or so years earlier so I could have lived here when stuff actually happened! You people are so lucky. I can only imagine how great it must have been. I heard that Connellsville used to have a lot of historical value. Not anymore... Well I've added my two cents. Sorry if I offended some people, but that's just how I feel.

Yes , Connellsville does have its problems, It has its Ideology to over look its problems, and it has its old fashion way of pointing fingers at a Scapegoat or an Easy target. The fact is, Problems Get solved individually. Not by Tracking down every person you think looks like They would be a "bad" person, but by looking in the Mirror, seeing the Truth about who the problem is. Everyone knows something that they let slip by...Everyone sees some one doing Some thing that is wrong, and Everyone is responsible for not speaking up, speaking out, Standing up for the victim and Putting down the oppressor. People want things to be good, start in your own homes...talk to your family, friends, even place anonymous Phone calls to authorities if need be. Or band together and demand that the public law enforcement do thier job. You pay thier wages...put them to work.

for those concerned citizens. nothing will change until we get rid of the ability to sue at the drop of a hat and punish according to the way we used to . there are many factors afffecting teens . the lack of discipline and respect as well as fear is necessary to return to what it was so to speak and to maintain that. until we get off our butts and decide there are just a little too many rights of the individual . and there is with out a doubt no fear in these kids . fear and respect go hand in hand. like it or not.

when i was back in c'ville some 8 10 years ago and i wqas driving around with my brother, I went to make a right on a street south of the library and he jumped and said no dont go down there. Asking why he tells me its full of drug dealers thats where they all live. I thought he was joking . So i go to turn again . he yells at me no ! Well it seems that our nationwide plague even made it to c'ville. So for the res of you complacent people and the ones who criticise the ones upset and making a stand and accusing and pointing fingers . Why don't you just back off sit down and let the rest of the people who want something done to bring back what we had once , get on with it . The nicey nicey way of life only works on nice people .Wake up folks there are a lot of not so nice people living in your home town. being nice is why we had our problem in New York . Because we are lax. Trust me it will be too late one day .
