Is there some way (email or regular mail) to contact the Connellsville Historical Society about John Schellenburger, carpenter, who lived in Connellsville in 1850? Thanks.

I have been reading various comments about Connellsville and its fate. I, too, like most of you grew up here. I remember the Soisson Thearte, the Orpheum, Davidson's, Moore's Music Store,Leon's , Hetzels and Swan's Soda fountains and on and on. I think allot of people have the desire to shop downtown, but the landlords have the rent too high. $700 to $1500 / month is too much. And there are only about 3 different people who control ownership on all the store fronts. They are holding the city hostage. So people who may want to start a business are afraid of the overhead. They are afraid that the consumer will not support them and take their dollars to WAL-Mart because it is convenient. Also, I hate to say it , but some people do not want to walk more than a few feet from their car to shop. In the good old days, people walked all over town. I'm sure we ALL remember walking to school, walking to East Park to play tennis or softball and then walking home. Our parents did not cater to us. We did not have our own cars. I remember walking to Coker stadium for football, and then walking all the way to the West Side for Pizza on 6 th St. It was called La Fiesta Pizza shop and had a juke box. People's way of thinking must change in order for Connellsville to turn around.

East Park is done. At least for this year. There are new tennis courts, new basketball courts, a bocci court, horseshoe pits, new playground equipment, a new railing along the creek, the bandshell has been repainted and parking for the handicapped has been provided. THE PLACE IS UNDER 24 HOUR VIDEO SURVEILANCE!!!!

Maybe someone could put in a food and drink place just for smokers in Connellsville. Maybe call it THE COFFIN NAIL. HA HA HA!

To Susie, I totally agree about the smoke. I hate it when I am eating and some thoughtless person lights up. Some businesses think if they go non smoking that they will loose business. I think some will complain, some will threaten not to come back, those people may stay away for a little while, but if they really liked the place, they will be back. I work at a fast food place that was worried about going non smoking, as I pointed out, the people who hang around smoking and drinking coffee are not makeing the company any richer. They just take up space. Sitting there all day smoking, drinking coffee, and talking. If they would go non smoking, The people would sit and eat then get up and make room for another customer who wants to enjoy a good meal. People who smoke are slowly getting use to public places with no smoking. Admit it or not.

Does anyone know if they finished East Park yet? I'm so happy that someone is fixing it up. I hope that they create a couple new jobs and hire a couple people to be watchmen down there to keep all their efforts safe and beautiful. Also maybe the good people who were involved in East park will start something good downtown.

Hey, I am sorry if i am filling up your guestbook..I swear this will hopefully be my last one on the state of downtown connellsville. But back in the ol'days if this was going on the whole city of connellsville would rise up and stand together. Today it's not like that. I am willing to do everything in my power yo help out. I just don't understand. The city can ask for a grant loan of up to 275,000 dollars...Turn downtown Connellsville into something like Reading. Vintage shopping etc. I just don't understand and i guess i never will. I can just say it's ahame. I look at these pictures of Pittsburgh Street filled with businesses and people and I swear to God Almighty I get sick to my stomach. I cannot believe the city officials let this happen...This town has so much potential..Bike Path, Beautiful River, The Railroad Yard. Well I am done ramblin on...No use anyway. Can someone please tell me when the Amtrak station was put in. Thank you

Just the other day, i was talking to my mom, she commented on how much business the West Side gets. Why is it so busy and the other side so dead? Maybe along with new business we also need to make some apartments in the bigger buildings. Just a thought.

what you need to do is take control of the government in cville make it a model for the rest of the country i was born and raised there but slowly it deteriorated as it still appears to be doing by the comments. wouldnt it be nice to take this little town and make it more eutopian as long as you have cetain people from cetain parts of town controlling everything it will never change. it will be bled by the elite and the few who have money you need to take it back make the changes make it a place people wait in line to come nad visit use some imagination . a revolution fo sorts is all that will save it . also i understand that years back after i left in the 70's that drug dealers moved in like so many other towns. they need to be driven out . you may never control drugs but you can sure as hell get rid of the outsiders than moved in and took over .

In reference to Michael's comments about the government in Connellsville and Fayette County and Garrett's desire to improve Connellsville. I have been living away from Connellsville for over 20 years. I last visited in July and was appalled at the state of the downtown - if that's what you call it! I think that Connellsville could capitalize on the Bike/Hike trail somehow. A hotel in town would be a start. Bikers and hikers can use Connellsville as a resting place should they desire to navigate the entire trail. Then, shops, restaurants, etc. would naturally follow. As for the elected officials and Fayette County voters going Democratic, perhaps those who know better don't live there anymore.

I am very happy to see that there are some people that want to help this incredible little town. I am a chef and have actually been pondering the thought of my own restaurant. garrett i agree that the town could use a place down by the river but you would have to convince the city officials to allow the zoning for this to happen. Michael, i would also like to say that i have nothing but respect for what you have been trying to do for this town. A suggestion to you may be to hold a gathering of your first ammendment right to free speech and try to get the towns support behind you. This town needs a leader Michael and you may just be that person. if you would like to you can contact me anytime. james

Yes I would love to put in some vintage shopping downtown, a penny dime candy store, clothing store, theatre, restaurant looking over the river, independent baseball team, but no help anywhere. I think the officials woud rather the people go to the shopping malls and shopping centers. Looking at the pictures on this site of main street in downtown connellsville compared to today makes me sick.

You know I would love to help in the efforts for a better downtown in Connellsville. I have saved some money and would love to help fix up all of the buildings in downtown Connellsville, I would love to help advertise the buildings for rent in the downtown area. I would love to help out as much as I can. But I haven't been able to have any luck with the city officials. Garrett P.S Down in Charleroi, Their is a place called Smitty's. A great resturant that is right on top of the river. Something like this in Connellsville would be great...

Michael,i understand what you are saying and i agree to an extent, however what i have said is true. If the former residents of Connellsville would spend just a little more time, effort and money in the community it would begin to rise out of its obvious depression. I am just as guilty of this as anyone else. How can larger companies begin to look at Connellsville if its own former residents deny thier heritage, and refuse to help it. I would love to be able to help bring this incredible little town to the next level but unfortunatly I am struggling to get by myself. If you read all of the classmate sections youll see there are alot of people who have fantastic jobs and have moved right away. That is what i have a problem with, do you see these people making any type of effort to help this wonderfull town? i can answer that, no. believe me when i say that if i could i would, i may have a lot of anger and hatred for the things that have happened to me in the past when i lived there but you know i still love this town.

Burns Drugstore is one of our oldest and finest stores in this town. I would love to be more faithful to the place but until they do something about the wall of cigarette smoke that smacks you in the face when you enter, I can no longer shop there or even enjoy one of those delicious cherry cokes and a great hamburger. I'm not anti smoker, but their air filtration system must not work. Just to enter for a paper, and exit immediately, makes you reek of the smell from head to toe, not to mention breathing that stuff in. It's a great little store...but that stops me from even considering entering any more.

I disagree James. The people have voted with their pocketbooks - and that is why capitalism has gotten us the high living we all enjoy today. Because capitalism is a democracy being put to use everyday. You can't force people to do something they aren't going to want to do. They spend their dollars in the malls because the malls have the infrastructure people need today - namely parking. The large cities will survive because they have other infrastructure in place and the advantage of a large centralized population; which Connellsville doesn't have. Until Connellsville begins tearing down some buildings to make things more shopping center like OR bring back a dependable transportation system like the streetcars; its downtown area is doomed to emptiness and decay. Then the state government will eventually provide tax benefits to tear down those old and now useless buildings in the hopes of making that land useful. Further, the centralization of large employers hasn't been kind to Connellsville and all of Fayette County for that matter. The advantages however should not be overlooked, Fayette County has less people this year than probably fifty years ago and some (myself included) would site that as a blessing. The low property values will make a nice retirement retreat, but this is painful on the families. To stay in Fayette County your options are severely limited in what you can do. It's also no coincidence that the largest employer is a hospital. And until a good highway is built between Connellsville/Uniontown and Pittsburgh, I don't see that changing. But I would emphasize it's not a bad thing, the bad thing is Fayette County's population is still much to large to be supported by employment. This is slowly correcting itself as people relocate to areas of improvement and probably in twenty years Fayette will no longer top the impoverish list for PA. Somerset has the same employment shortfalls but the economic conditions sustains their 80,000 people quite well.

I wish someone would start investing in Connellsville and bring back those great times! Put in a movie theater, bakery, Burns Drug Store is still there, Thank God! And still has the little food area in the back where you can still get a real Cherry Coke made with syrup. Not the stuff coke has in the bottle. There food is very reasonable. We need to have a variety of stores. I understand that Mount Pleasent has a Penny Candy store. It may not be a penny any more but it would be great to eat some of those candies from our past. Maybe we could have a hardware store, barber/beauty shop, toy store ect. I hope someone with money takes advantage of the empty buildings and bring Connellsville alive again. If I would hit the power ball, I would do it! We have all that Free parking. Its a shame theres not much to see.

Remembering yesteryear...Bond-fires at East Park following the Christmas season...Lines two blocks plus long to get into the movie house...Penny candy in almost every store in town...Parades that were worth seeing...Parking lots almost filled...Saturday evenings town was crowded...Police walked beats...People spoke in passing...Drug store soda-fountains jammed packed after school...Dances at the Youth Center...Sock hops at schools...Wonder if Connellsville will ever see these days again or are they forever gone???

Very good site, but I didn't find anything on Ripley & Co., a glass factory 1910-1918 that bought the Baldwin Automobile Co. A few months after Ripley closed in 1918, Wm. A. I have enjoyed reading all the messages and reliving old memories. East Park was the best and hopefully it is being cared for now. In March I drove through town and stopped at Hill Grove Cem.; like an earlier writer I was saddened by the poor condition. Is there no security in the area--with the homes in the neighborhood someone must have a clue to what is happening. This site is great to help us "visit" our old hometown. Thanks.

I went to Connesville High School. Class of "95" and I only have one thing to say. That is that Connesville and its people have to grow with the times. You all have minds set by your fathers father, never to see what the town needs. The town is based on its children. The same children that you have not given anything to in a very long time. I don't mean parks and such. What I mean is somewhere to hang out. Their was a Coffee Shop that wanted to help with the kids, but one thing led to another and they left. So tell me if their is anything for them to do then get in trouble like they have when I lived their. If you all would think of the big picture and not let's hate everything that moves in to help the kids.CONTACT ME at www. drkklown@yahoo.com

I think this web- site really advertizes the beauty of Connellsville and the Fay-West area. The problem with the economy is answered in the history at the beginning of this web-site. The coal and coke industry forced all others out, and kept others from moving in. They wanted a corner on the labor force. There were so many millionares because they had no one to compete for their labor force, and they got rich by paying low wages. None of their millions was invested in the future of the area. For those interested the work at East Park has started. Surfaces for new tennis courts are laid and fencing is being installed. The building housing the restrooms has been replaced. A new rail has been built along the creek. Other improvements are also in the works. Who can forget the Thursday Night programs and movies that followed. Does anyone remember "The Green Archer"? Those were the good old days.

Pretty much born and raised in Connellsville. Moved to CA when the old Volkswagen plant closed and did all my highschool in Southern California. I moved back in 1994, and now I have a family of my own here. Growing up in Connellsville, I really had no interest in the history of the area, but lately I've shown some reat interest in the area and things of the past. I've posted some pictures of my great grandfather, Franklin McElhaney, and his Automatons in bottles. You can see my photos online at my weblog by copying the following web address into your browser- http://www.xanga.com/item.asp?user=gravity&tab=weblogs&uid=2700355 You can see these fantastic works of art above the Connellsville Library in the Historical Office. They were donated when my great Uncle Franklen and Great Aunt Vera passed away. Lots of great stuff up there to check out, so swing in and have a gander. It will surprise you.

Connellsville needs to have a Web Site with a Calander of events around the city and local area. That way visitors can find out whats going on more easily. They could even access this info from the library. It would also help us residents who do not subscribe to the news paper find out whats comeing up and plan our outings accordingly.

Hello, I visited your historic little town last weekend for the first time. Nice place, nice people. Along with my Dad, I spent part of my time in Hill Grove Cemetery looking for ancestors. We were a little dismayed by the poor condition of a lot of the headstones. Many were toppled over or just piled on top of each other. It a shame to see such disrepair for a cemetery that has a lot of historical significance. Is anybody in charge of the maintenance of this cemetery?

Someone really need's to do more to bring quality job's to this area! I worked at Lenox Crystal until it closed it's doors, what a shame! $5.00 an hour is'nt gonna pay the bills! The local government in Connellsville should be ashamed of there selves! Try lowering the taxes around here instead of pushing local businesses out!

I was just in Connellsville today and was sad to see yet another store leaving the down town area. Doller General wasn't the best but at least it was something. Can't someone out there with money save the downtown area? With something more than doller stores and Good Will stores. Someone needs to breath life back into this town. Then maybe people would buy local again. You can't spend money when there are no stores.
