My father was raised on a farm located on Narrows Road outside Connelsville. I have been to Connelsville often throughout my life and have always loved the surrounding area. I am going to print some of the old pictures of Connelsville and show them to my father. I am sure he will be delighted to walk down memory lane

To Britcoms4ever: Please don't call me Mrs. Russell-it makes me feel so old! Yes, Ireland is a lovely place, you should visit someday. A few of my college friends have and really enjoyed it. Northern Ireland is not the war zone it is portrayed as on tv. Most people are lovely and the scenery is beautiful, as it is in all of Ireland. A note to punk rocker: I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say no one wants to see your negative comments here. Email them somewhere else. Didn't your mother ever tell you that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all?

My Grandfather, Domenico DiCarlo arrived from Intermesoli, Province of Teramo, Italy in 1912, through Ellis Island. The Ship's manifest shows Connellsvile as his "final destination". I know he stayed there awhile but he came to Canada in 1914 or so. Is there much of an Italian population in Connellsville now? Any helpful records of workers at the time - I believe he worked building roads or railway lines. There were several from his village and the nearby village of Pietracamela who were on the boat with him and also intended to go to Connellsville, though they listed relatives on Main Street, Pittsburg as there immediate destination and address in the U.S. Some of the surnames were Cherubino, Medori, DeBenedetto. Are there currently people by these names in your city? Are there good sources of info for Pittsburg? Thanks.

To Mrs. Russell, I think its great that you have live in Ireland. I have often dreamed of visiting there. Along with Scotland and Great Britian. I have always wanted to go to Great Britian since I was little. I also lived in South Connellsville and graduated in 1981. I only moved a couple hours from our hometown.

I have just discovered this website while helping my daughter with a school project. I have really enjoyed reading through the messages people have sent. I, too, am a transplanted Connellsville native, having left in 1986. I grew up in So. C'ville and graduated from CAHS in 1978. I think it would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me. I don't get a chance to return for class reunions because the dates never seem to be selected when we are planning trips home. I have found it really interesting living in Northern Ireland for the last 17 years and would like to emphasize to everyone that it is nothing like what is portrayed on TV. Ireland is lovely and the people are really friendly. The only downfall is the weather leaves much to be desired (lots of rain, cloud, etc.)Anyway, anyone from the class of 78 (or further back, So. C'ville Elementary)who would like to say hi, I'd love to hear from you!

Hello, How are you this evening. My name is Garrett Larrow and I reside in Uniontown, Pa and have all of my life. A few years back, my friend and I wanted to start a baseball league that involved some counties in South Western Pennsylvania. We have come to the conclusion in a few years of planning that these cities would do great with a baseball team : East Division Greensburg, Mt.Pleasant, Scottdale, and Connellsville. West Division Uniontown, Brownsville, California, and Charleroi. We want to start this league so that families can go out and watch a good competeive baseball game with hometown players for less then 20 bucks for a family of four! Each team will have to have an Owner with $300 dollars that will go towards Uniforms and equipment. Each team will also have a General Manager(will take care of transactions) and Manager(manager team) This is a must. My friend and I are also putting a lot of money towards this ourselves. We want to know if Connellsville is interested. This will help revitalize these towns and bring some good ol' fashion fun back into your community. Please email me or call me at 724-880-3009. I will be happy to pass a long more information. Sincerely, Garrett M. Larrow

To Tim Hillen, Tried to email you but it did not go thru. You can be sure this is nothing new for me because I am not computer talented.in re: to Gibson Terrace I don't know where to start so I woll begin anywhere. You can see if a name rings a bell. Marlene Dill. We all called her Pickles. Real cute full of life and still around id my sources are correct. She had a niece Carol McCormick a real beauty. Remember David and Nancy Foltz? I think they ended up in California. So did Peggy Shannon ( her brother was Jim. He was a college prof. at I.U.P. probable retired now) Jean Mitzi Soission also ended up in California she was a cousin to the Shannons. Jack Miller, I heard he became a minster. Logan Ricther lived by the Foultz's across from the community building. Remember Sam an Bill Queer? I think they lived near the Yarnell"s. One of the Yarnells was lucky enough to marry Sara TRump. A beauty and a real lady. Do you remember Jean Helms? She lived with her sisters family the Percys due to the death of her mother. Also her sister Delores. The all moved to Colorado and Jean was killed at the age of 24 (or very there about ) leaving an infant daughter. I did not get her married name but she is in that big cementary at Pennsville. One of her friends was the Hartman(Faye) girl Remember the Hartman's?Joe Dellagatti lived there(teacher) next door to the Watson family. Gayle Watson was one of the high School cheerleaders. Probably one of the besr. Her brother is Russell who had a good job at Anchor. Thank God he missed the shooting down there. The Rowan family lived there and they were good kids. Sarah, their mother was a real real nice lady. Remember Joanne Mitchell or the descani girl with the lovely blond hair? They lived next door to thr Piasecki family. Sonny, Patricia and Martha Louise. I think their mother Nellie had the cleanest place there and Patty did a lot of the duties to keep the place clean for her Mother because Nelli worked at the rubber factory. They went to Holy Trinity School. Lorraine Brooks lived across the street from the Piasecki family. She was blind and played the piano. Their are many more people I could list for you Like Bud Cable, cousin to the Watsons but maybe this will bring back some memories to you. These were all good people just trying to make it thru this life. Funny thing is I ran into one of them in N.Y. about 20 years at "the house of chan" resturant.I was alone and she invited me to join her. Seems she worked in the Market and stayed at the Americana when in N.Y.. Needless to say we spoke of Gibson Terrace and Connellsville fondly. O f course until we lived other places we did not realize how really special home roots are. Sincerely Lola Grace Gate

Hi Tim, are you related to Jay and Fay Hillen? I also grew up in Gibson Terrace, and yes there was a baseball field above the terrace, there were also basketball courts, tennis courts and a playground. I remember walking to South Side School, crossing what we called the black bridge, and there was a creek under it.. We used to play in the woods up by the creek, oh also the creek was deep enough that you could swim in it at certain time s of the year. Also remember going to turtle rock and the swinging bridge, and the beach. Unfortunately there were several reasons I left Connellsville, and I am one of those who cannot afford to uproot and leave my current place of residency and move back there. I am toying with the idea of retiring there in approximately 15 years. Would be nice to come home. All my siblings still live in the area, except for my brother Jerry, he is lost and noone knows where he is, if he is even still alive. All of you who are doing the constant complaining, wise up and put your thoughts/money where your mouth is and do something constructive and make home a better place to live. It isn't any diffefent anywhereelse, believe me, I live in an area that is a lot larger than Connellsville and people are always complaining about nothing to do, what you make of life is entirely up to do, don't count on someoneelse to entertain you. There stated my piece. Hello to all my family and friends who have stayed there; hope to see you real soon.

There are so many intelligent, inovative people in Connellsville, it's a shame that they can't all work together with their talents and dreams and make Connellsville the quaint little town that I know it can be....it just needs a little TLC and different people to step up to the plate to make a difference. There is a lot of "old money" here, families that have been here for generations, that could make a difference if they would choose to. Fresh faces and fresh ideas could transform us into "the place to be"........

Is there anyone out there that lived in or around Gibson Terrace 1950's. I see a ton of names that pop up that looks familar, also for the ones doing all the complaining about C'ville I'm sorry you are young and never had a chance to see or jump off of the Swinging bridge, or get chased off the lawn into the river by that big dog across from Snake Rock,or go to the free movies/bon fires at East Park. I think if the complainers would get out and walk along the Yough river or go to Casparis cave, or walk past Foley's dam just get out of the bars and look at the beauty under your nose's. I live in Oklahoma and I could walk for 30 minutes and never see a tree or a hill.If everyone that lives there now would hold the mayor's nose to the grindstone maybe C'ville will look back at the good ole days and try to revive the ole girl into what she once was. To Sherry and James keep dreaming who knows maybe one of you might or possibly the two of you could be in charge of getting Connellsville back on the map, even if it starts with a $1.00 movie. Yes it is sad that all of the good folks that remember the good times can't afford to up root and return to the old homestead. And in closing I can't forget Willy Hilly remember you can catch more flies with honey than you can vinegar, if you are aware of the problems in Connellsville get involed to get them fixed Willy be part of the solution not the problem. If someone out there remembers Tim Hillen drop me aline and I will answer I'm sure willy hilly will.

I totally agree with the many good messages about C'ville, I have not lived there in about 25 years, but I miss it and the many friends I still have there. The only reason I moved then was for lack of jobs there and to grow up. I had a great childhood, we went to the Orpheum Movie Theatre in C'ville for only 25 cents and saw Paul Shannon and did the twist on stage, they were great times. We swam in the Ohiopyle very cold river, but loved it. We went to Shady Grove and Maple Grove and to a place in Everson or Scottdale, can't remember the name of the pool, great times were had at all of these places. And of course Linden Hall. Back then you played outside in the Summer until dark with all of the neighborhood friends and your parents did not have to worry about you getting into trouble or in harms way. I feel blessed to have grown up when I did and where I did. I still visit C'ville twice a year, I have family there and lots of friends. I love being able to drive to Bud Murphy's and have it only take me about 7 minutes to get there, in Atlanta it takes you 30 minutes or more to get to just about anywhere you go, there is always alot of traffic. I can relax when I am home in C'ville or in Ohiopyle with family. People make a town what it is, complaining doesn't get you anywhere until you are willing to do something about it to make it better yourself. Sometimes you have to move away to appreciate what you had in the first place. Hello to all of my friends reading this message and to my family, I know some of my cousins read this site - I love you! Take care and God Bless! Try and keep warm. It was 8 degrees here two mornings this week.

Hello everyone who remembers me. I know you know my family they still live there. I want to tell you everyone complains unstead of complaining stand up and be a voice try to change for the better of your children there growing up if you don't want them to leave home. Connellsville, is a fine place to raise children. I live close to the big city about 20 minutes from Washington, DC. And I am here to tell you Connellsville is heaven compared to other places. Every town has it problems. The problem there is to many people looking for hand outs. Stand up and be a voice show you are concerned in a postive way unstead of the town bar. The residents who vote and at least try to change for the better I take my hat off you have a lot of work in front of you. But remember one thing every town has its problems

I was raised in Connellsville, and couldn't wait to get out! But now I am here to tell you how I miss Connellsville, and people there. Connellsville, is a fine place to raise children. Every town has its problems. I been gone for over 12 years now. I can't tell you how I miss Connellsville playing hide and sike with the Betters family. I have ideas for Connellsville to build back up and I may just come back and help. Because you never forget where you come from. Connellsville in my mine will always be home which I don't live there now. Residents it takes a community to change things in a positive way. Stop complaining and vote and attend town meetings.

I was born in Connellsville on Labor Day (September 3) 1956, just after the Susquicentennial. I have some home movies of the celebration parade that travelled north on Pittsburgh St, showing my mother very pregnant . If anyone happens to know the exact date of that parade, please email me, or post a note on the Guestbook here. Thanks very much. Frank Goron

To answer ????'s question, I'll bother the historical society for more old pictures after the site is redone. And to respond to the entry previous to mine, the river and the trail is clearly a good feature for Connellsville - but unfortunately a dam prevents the opportunity to raft/kayak down the Youghiogheny from Ohiopyle. Perhaps a way to circumvent this obstacle would help tie Connellsville to the tourist mecca up river.

everyone is responsible the government and the people. quit whining and do something.what the world, as well as connellsville needs is imagination, a commodity in short supply everwhere. it is true you need to attract business or create a tourist business of your own to draw people there. i have several ideas and they are right in front of you. just dont believe anyone has tried them. the very best resource you have there is the age of the town the age of the large homes and most of all the river. does anyone realize that is one of the most clean rivers around . some of the best fishing in the country. there is a lot of blight in the town i know. it was there when i lved there i can only assume its even worse now.get rid of the drug dealers. if there are to be drugs then pot only (hehe). think about it where does the most activity occur there. softball beer greasy burger joints you need something new , different. tourism is big business. corporations like a good worker base and tax breaks. now go my children go with the seeds i have planted in you. learn, read , think about it !!! ...just kidding about the seed thing.

It's sad that so many feel that the government is responsibile for a town's prosperity... or lack thereof. Realize that the role of the government is to enforce minimal laws and provide services best suited to a monopoly (fire protection, water service, etc.). A Boys N' Girls club, wow, what a moneymaker. Dollar movie theater, let's see, those even fail in the prosperous towns, I wonder how they will do in C'ville? Hey, here's an idea, fire the mayor and hire a new one. Hasn't worked the last twelve times, why do you think this time will be different? Concentrate on making Connellsville an attractive spot for EMPLOYERS. Provide well-educated workers at market prices, and offer tax-incentives for business investment. I have a soft-spot in my heart for Connellsville, but I do remember the government first/pro-union/welfare state mentality that prevails there, and I'm glad I escaped it.

I was raised in Connellsville, Pa Connellsville is my home town. I just visted their recently. I really think its ashame the way Connellsville government is letting C'ville become a Goat Town I think Connellsville can do something with the old Dollar General and the Dollar store. I can't believe you can't think of something useful to use them places for. How about Boys and Girls club their our companys and organzation that help fund this kind of stuff for kids. Our police officers instead of watching children that they know thats helding down the wrong path. Do nothing to help steir our youth there to nothing please help our youth give them hope and something to do in that town. How about a dollar movie place and sell pop corn come on get them teens off the street and give them something to do besides run and drink. Residents their depend on the government their to do something well its in your hands help the youth there. I will be waiting for respond. OH one more thing I would love to come there and help out start a dollar movie theater or maybe 1.50 theater. something their can afford to do and take their young dates to besides Pechins and movies up in Uniontown some kids and people there have no where there. Don't put people down their that are poor help them. Make jobs there. Connellsville Senior High could help with movie theather. would raise money for schools there. To be able to help familys that never every been to Kennywood help them go money raised though movie Vidio could help alot. Help them. Govenment stand up. don't look away I was once in their shoes with nothing to do and no way to get to Mall or movies or afford movies in Uniontown. All you have to offer is drinking help your youth there

Bill H, your "Battleship" building memories are interesting. I have never heard of this. Tell us more, more exact location and do you have a picture? Also, would like to here some info on "Y" hill (very steep section of Fairview Ave just west of South Pittsburgh Street). I know we call it the "Y" hill because of the YMCA that used to be located there, but would like to know "Y" it was built (sorry, couldn't resist). What year? I love the street, but it makes no logical sense to build such a steeply inclined street. Please, there ought to be several people out there who know some stories of it's building.

Re:The'Battleship' An imposing multi-story frame structure built on the very steep hillside near the bottom of Swaugertown Road overlooking Mountz Creek and the beginning of the Narrows Road bridge. It's owner for many years was Louie Krobe, last owned by Harry Wood, a relative I believe. Built during the Industrial Revolution, no doubt to provide housing for the immigrants working at the Sligo Steel Mill and or Coal & Coke works nearby. It was torn down for the construction of the U S Rte.119 Bypass in the early fifties. One can reasonably assume the activity therein resulted in the name "Battleship".

In the 1950tys there was a house on Isabella Rd with an elaborate Christmas display. This kind of display now is common but it was unusual then. It included santa's sleigh with rudolph and reindeer, carolers, santa on a ladder going up to the top of chimney, frosty the snowman, lights on the house, Chistmas music being played on loudspeakers and a excellent full scale nativity scene. This display created a lot of traffic on Isabella Road. Among the foot traffic on Isabella road were four children aged about 4 years through 10 years. These children would stop and pray at the nativity scene. One Christmas season it was especially cold and snow covered. The lady of the house discovered baby Jesus was missing from the nativity scene. Perplexed she wondered why someone would steal baby Jesus. After two days there was a knock on her door. There stood a four year old holding baby Jesus who said "It was so cold I had to take him home but it is warmer now so my mother says I have to bring him back."

I was born in Connellsville. I have visited many times but lived there for about ten years. I remember them as the best years of my life. I lived in Snydertown for several years, on Campbell Ave., and I also lived on Isabella Road. I attended the three room Rock Ridge School. Last time I went to its old site there were only trees were the old school houses had been. How I wish the one room wooden classroom had been saved. What a wonderful museum it would have made. There aren't even any pictures of it. After my family moved to Pgh, I always longed for the old school. I think after leaving there my grade school education stopped. I was never happy in school again. Snydertown was a great place for a young boy to grow up. There were fields and woods and clean air. Spaces to explore. My Grandfather, Shirley Sembower, owned the Sembower Market at the foot of the yellow brick Spingfield Pike. I spent my summers delivering groceries with my uncle Bob Sembower. My cousin, Jack Staley did too. Those were wonderful days, and I'm glad I have them to remember. There are good old days! I lived them in Connellsville. I'm writing this for me, my uncle Bob, my aunt Shirley Jean and my cousin, Jack. Thanks for the opportunity to express my feeling about living in Connellsville.

For what it's worth to those of us who have moved away, you can still read the Daily Courier on line by logging on to www.dailycourier.com. I believe the courier is now owned by the Tribune Review out of Pittsburgh. I was in Connellsville a few weeks ago visiting my mother when a gasoline/kerosene tanker truck rolled over on the route 119 curve just past the memorial bridge on the west side, exploded and burned. Huge columns of smoke rose from the west side. All the fire departments were called in to help. It sent a shiver up my spine to see the South Connellsville Volunteers racing to the scene, just like in the old days.

HI Just wanted to let you know William Crawford fought his The Battle of Sandusky Plains in near Upper Sandusky, Ohio not Sandusky, Ohio. Sandusky is 62 miles north of us. Col Crawford was captured close to Bucyrus, Ohio at what is called Leesville. He was burned at the stake in what is called Crawford, ohio between Upper Sandusky and Carey, Ohio. Thought this might help in case anyone would inquire about seeing the monument for his battle of what we call Battle island near the site of the battle. Our museum has a lot of information about the battle and a broken sword thought to be Crawfords but not proven. Thank You Tom Hill
